How to Discover Mangosteen, the Queen of Fruits

The mangosteen tree is a tropical evergreen tree and it is believed that the tree originates from Southeast Asia region. The tree can grow from seven to twenty-five meters tall and the color of the fruit is a deep reddish-purple when ripe. Sometimes, mangosteen fruit is called the Queen of Fruits in Asia.

The fruit has hard shell and it is shaped like a tangerine, while it has a bright white color. Although the shell of the mangosteen looks tough and hard, in fact it is soft and quite easy to open. The mangosteen tree is considered ultra-tropical and thus it cannot stand temperatures below forty or above one hundred Fahrenheit. Usually it also needs high atmospheric humidity and an annual rainfall of at least fifty inches with no long periods of dry season.

If you want to discover mangosteen, you should understand that the tree cannot grow on limestone and it needs deep and rich organic soil, in particular sandy loam or laterite. It is best to plant mangosteen at the beginning of the rainy season. The young tree should be put in place really cautiously and given a sufficient amount of watering straight away.

For the first couple of years, it is necessary to give the tree partial shading, while after this period the tree can grow fully under the sun. Normally the mangosteen tree will do well in fertile clay or loam soil. A good drainage is important, but the tree seems to have no problem near lakes and streams.

It is believed that the mangosteen is native to the Malay Peninsula and around some islands of Indonesia. It has been extensively cultivated in the more humid areas of the Asiatic Tropics. People who have not had a chance to discover mangosteen will feel happy to finally do so because there is no other tropical fruit that is highly regarded as this mangosteen fruit.

The fruit does not have the insipid flavor that is ascribed to other tropical fruits and thus people who discover mangosteen for the first will usually like it. The mixture of a beautiful shape and color with the delicate and enticing flavor makes the mangosteen ranks high above others in the fruit world.
