The Unique Aspects of the Mangosteen Plant
The mangosteen plant is considered as one of the most important plants because it has various beneficial nutrients and antioxidants that can be found from its fruit. The mangosteen plant is a rarity and it is not the same as the ordinary mango plant because the two are completely different. The basic of mangosteen plant The mangosteen plant is part of Guttiferae group, which is a family of largely tropical trees and shrubs that secrete a kind of acrid yellow resinous juice. Although the plant has become popular recently, there is still lack of information about this mangosteen plant. In fact, nobody can determine where and when the mangosteen plant was first cultivated. However, it is widely believed that it comes from the Southeast Asia region. Some experts suggested that the mangosteen plant was first domesticated in Thailand or Burma. For many years, the mangosteen fruit is shipped from Singapore to Calcutta, India and even to China due to its medicinal benefits. In today's world, we are living surrounded by frenzied commercialism and even mangosteen is also being promoted using network marketing. This marketing strategy usually focuses on the xanthones, one type of substances found in the mangosteen fruit, especially in its rind or hull. Each xanthone is believed to have health benefits for the body and the remarkable thing about mangosteen is that there are more than forty xanthones found in its pericarp or rind. Therefore, mangosteen is considered as the most xanthone-rich product in the world. How to grow mangosteen plant The mangosteen plant is an erect and very slow-growing tree. It has a pyramidal crown that can reach approximately twenty to eighty-two feet in height with dark-brown or almost black flaking bark, which contains much yellow, gummy, and bitter latex. This mangosteen plant produces fruits that are capped by the prominent calyx at the stem end. The fruit also has four to eight triangular, flat remnants of the stigma in a rosette at the apex. The shape of the fruit is round with dark-purple to red-purple skin. The mangosteen plant cannot grow properly on limestone and it will do best in deep, rich organic soil. In several locations like India, the best plan where it can grow is on clay that contains much coarse material with a little silt. Based on this fact, the mangosteen plant is indeed unique in all aspects.
