Why Mangosteen Research is Important
Recently, there are many people conducted mangosteen research because there is an increasing demand for knowledge concerning this Southeast Asian tropical fruit. This situation arises because many people have heard about the health benefits of mangosteen fruit which is also known as "Queen of Fruits" in Asia. People are wondering about the origin of the fruit and mangosteen products, such as mangosteen juice or sometimes known as Xango. It is a common belief that the tree is originated from Southeast Asia region, in particular the Malay Peninsula and some islands in Indonesia. This tropical region is ideal for mangosteen and it continues to flourish there. Mangosteen research has showed that the fruit is not related to mango as many people believed. Mangosteen comes from a tropical evergreen tree, which can grow from seven up to twenty-five meters high. It produces a lot of reddish and purplish mangosteen fruit, which has a thick and hard outer shell. Nowadays, the mangosteen is also being cultivated in some Hawaiian Islands. Unfortunately, the fruit is not shipped to the continental United States because of fears that the mangosteen will bring the fruit fly. In this case, mangosteen research in one facility in Hawaii is in process of creating supplements and additives so the fruit can be transported successfully to the United States without fear of the fruit fly. For now, the mangosteen is rarely available as a fresh fruit in the United States, although it can be found in cans or frozen form. Understanding xanthones Understanding the benefits of xanthones is an important aspect in the mangosteen research. In 1939, an organic compound called a xanthone was being introduced as an insecticide. Normally xanthone is used as a form of ovicide for coddling the eggs of moths or as a larvicide. Some medical chemical activities also use this compound, such as to find the urea level in the blood. Several naturally occurring compounds are formed by the chemical structure of xanthone and one of them is mangostin. Mangosteen research has lead mangostin to the mangosteen fruit. In fact, mangostin is a vital organic compound that is associated to some parts of the fruit. In addition, it is believed that this compound was involved in giving the fruit its name. Currently mangosting is being researched carefully because it is thought to have a variety of biological properties that are beneficial to humans, such as anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. Further mangosteen research is still needed to determine the health benefits from consuming the fruit regularly.
